And at 12.10pm the six girls and two boys, aged 11 to 18, pulled themselves out of the pool to celebrate their achievement.

During the six hours, the youngsters kept their strength up by eating pasta, bananas and drinking Lucozade while continuing to tread water.

The completion of the record-breaking performance was a double celebration for the youngsters who used the opportunity to raise cash for children suffering from cancer.

They have raised more than £1,000 for charity from sponsorship which will be added to anything extra put in collection boxes at the swimming centre.

Head coach David Duro said: "I'm very proud of all of my swimmers. It's been a huge achievement."

He thanked staff and management at the Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre for giving them free use of the pool and parents and supporters who cheered on the group.

The youngsters came up with the idea for setting the record after realising there was no existing Guinness World Record for treading water.
