A Shropshire pensioner's home was ransacked by intruders who struck during the week of the anniversary of her late husband's death.
Winifred Gregson, of Dawley Bank, Telford, has been left devastated after thieves stole a haul of jewellery which her late husband had given to her and a computer.
Fortunately the 74-year-old was enjoying respite care at Rylands in Newport when the break-in happened.
But her daughter, Pam, who is full-time carer for her mother, said the door which the thieves smash-ed through with a crowbar led to her mother's bedroom, so she would have come face-to-face with the thieves.
Miss Gregson said: "It had been ransacked. The laptop had gone and all of her jewellery, which wasn't worth a lot but had a lot of sentimental value to mother.
"She was so upset when we had to tell her but now we've bought her a dog to protect her and it seems to have stopped her talking about the break-in.
"The house was a mess. I was a nervous wreck."
Miss Gregson and her brother Rob hope their mother's story will help catch the thieves who did the burglary and encourage them to return the jewellery, which included earrings, necklaces including one with a cross on it and two or three rings.
Miss Gregson added: "They got through the back door which leads into what was the dining room but now is my mother's bedroom.
"The police said they got in with a crowbar. She could have been there in bed. We could have been killed in our own beds.
"You don't know what they would have done if we had been there, they could have hit us over the heads with the crowbar and got everything."
Sarah Warren, spokeswoman for Telford police, said the burglary, which was discovered at 11.30am on May 1 but could have happened from April 27, when Mrs Gregson went into care, was being investigated by the burglary team.
Anyone with information can contact Telford police on 08457 444 888 or the family have asked for anyone with the jewellery to leave it anonymously at their home where they would find it.
