The house, which stood beside the fallen Burway Bridge, fell into the river at 11.30am.
Its contents spilled into muddy flood waters and this afternoon just two side walls and its roof remained intact.
Residents today said the elderly couple who had lived in the house on Corve Street for 41 years had already been evacuated in the early hours of yesterday morning and were not present when it fell.
Eyewitness Fred Davies, of Shrewsbury, saw the house fall. He said: "The river had been washing against the walls. Then there was a loud crack and two of the outside walls just fell into the river.
"The contents spilled into the water. There was furniture, a wardrobe and all sorts of other things. They just went into the water and were washed away."
Jake Berriman, head of planning at South Shropshire District Council, had inspected the property two hours before it fell.
He said: "I went there this morning and it was clearly severely undermined by flood waters. I'm not surprised that it's fallen. There were several clear vertical cracks this morning. The property was for sale."
