Crash victim 'one in a million'
The devastated family of a Wolverhampton businessman killed in a car smash on a rain-drenched road in Kidderminster today told how he spoke to his mother just minutes before his death.
Amith Dhaliwal ran two family businesses, Hamberys newsagents in Kidderminster and The Vineyard off-licence in Tettenhall.
The 23-year-old, of Conister Road in Palmers Cross, died on Saturday when his Ford Fiesta was involved in an accident on the A449 Kidderminster to Wolverhampton Road.
Relatives say dedicated Mr Dhaliwal had gone to the town that morning to put in a couple of hours work, even though a family wedding was due to have taken place later on.
The former Asda Wolverhampton worker called his mother just before setting off from Kidderminster to ask if a shirt could be pressed for him for the occasion.
Tragically he never arrived home and was pronounced dead at the scene near the Cookley Arms at Caunsall just before 12 noon.
West Midlands Police say the road was not flooded at the time but was very wet. Investigations are now under way to see if the conditions were a contributing factor in the tragedy.
Today his family spoke to the Express & Star and said they will never forget the former Regis School pupil, whom they affectionately referred to as Mitti D, or his wonderful smile.
They issued a statement describing him as "one in a million" and paying tribute to the man they said was their "hero."
"His core point was his family," the statement read. "He was very family-orientated and loved all his relatives young and old.
"But he also extended his warmth and caring attitude to everyone who knew him. We will miss his friendly smile and his never-ending enthusiasm.
"He was one in a million and God has picked the best of the bunch. He is our hero and will never be forgotten."
Family members say Mr Dhaliwal was a confident driver and told how they believed the road where he died has always been dangerous and needs to be improved.
North Worcestershire Police are appealing for information. Witnesses are asked to contact Pc Andy Saunders, from the road policing unit, on 08457 444 888.
