Car park set for approval
A temporary car park with 191 spaces at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital looks set to get the go-ahead. It will replace the 200 spaces due to be lost during the redevelopment of staff accommodation.
Planning officers at Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council say the scheme is justified and would generate no additional traffic.
Members of the council's development control committee have been recommended to approve the application which will be discussed at a meeting on Tuesday evening.
A report to members says: "Although the trust is developing a Green Travel Plan to reduce staff driving to the site by offering credible alternatives, alternative measures are currently not in place to mitigate the loss."
It says the proposed five-year car park would be provided before the residential site next to Mytton Oak Road is redeveloped.
This would provide a seamless transfer in parking without impacting on the operation of the hospital.
Six lighting columns are also included in the application. Two letters of objection have been received by the borough council on the grounds the car park could become permanent.
The objections also raised fears about the detrimental impact the application would have on the quality of life for nearby residents.
But the report says the application is "logical, requiring minimal works, and lies within the confines of the hospital site with limited public views from outside."
The officer's report recommends the application for approval on the condition the car park is only used for five years.
