The Crown Inn at Munslow wins a Michelin guide placeEight Shropshire pubs have made it into a new Michelin eating out guide which highlights the best places in Britain for enjoying "good food in informal surroundings".

A team of inspectors have eaten, drunk and slept their way around every county in the British Isles over the past year to compile a list of 550 or more pubs worthy of praise in the new 2008 directory.

Their list includes The Mytton & Mermaid at Atcham, The Feathers at Brockton, The Burlton Inn at Burlton, The Sun Inn at Marton, The Crown at Munslow, The Fox at Newport, The Hundred House at Norton, and The Armoury in Shrewsbury.

A further five pubs close to the Shropshire border are also included in the directory - The Roebuck at Brimfield, The Bell Inn at Yarpole, The Salutation at Weobley, The Colliers Arms at Clows Top, and The Combermere Arms at Burleydam.

The guide says: "Some serve creative, contemporary cooking with more of an international flavour, but equally there are plenty of places offering traditional British favourites too."

The inspectors praised the "constantly changing blackboard menus providing interesting modern English dishes underpinned by local produce" at The Feathers, the "genial service" at The Sun, and the "dash of imagination" added to dishes at The Crown.

They said The Fox at Newport "really excels at the big get-together" and applauded The Hundred House for having "a quirky style all of its own" and using produce from its own herb garden. The Armoury earned plaudits for its "buzzy atmosphere" and menu offering something for everyone.

The Burlton Inn was praised for not "reinventing the wheel" and concentrating on quality traditional produce, and the inspectors said the Mytton & Mermaid offered a pleasing combination of traditional fare and "modern treats".

Five Powys pubs are named in the directory - The Felin Fach Griffin at Brecon, Nantyffin Cider Mill Inn and The Bear at Crickhowell, The Old Black Lion at Hay-on-Wye, and The Talkhouse at Pontdolgoch - while the overall UK pub of the year, according to the guide, is the Oliver Branch & Beech House at Rutland in the East Midlands.
