A decision on whether to approve plans for a controversial biomass burning power plant in Bishop's Castle could be delayed so that residents have more time to speak out.

About 200 residents attended a meeting in Bishop's Castle on Tuesday night to voice their concern over the plans.

They are worried that they are not being given enough time to voice their opinions or find out additional information.

Today Councillor Peter Phillips said he had written to district planning chief Councillor Colin Pendry and council leader Councillor Cecilia Motley.

His letter says: "I'm writing to ask you to delay consideration of this application from your January committee to a month later.

"This will enable the public a much more reasonable time to lodge comments.

"Because the application was lodged on October 29, the response period embraces the holidays and is effectively much reduced."

Today Councillor Colin Pendry, chairman of South Shropshire District Council's planning committee, refused to commit to an extension.

He said: "We cannot give an immediate decision on that. There would have to be internal discussions."
