A man suffered a fractured jaw when he was struck on the head by a gang as he walked with a friend in Telford early today.

The pair were attacked after a brief exchange with the four men in Market Street, Oakengates, between 2.45am and 3am.

Chris Ammonds, for Telford Police, said: "Although his friend managed to escape unharmed, the victim was struck on the head and in the face by what appeared to be a wheel brace during the assault.

"The victim was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital following this attack and has sustained a fractured jaw and two deep cuts to the back of his head as a result of the assault.

"He may require surgery to repair the damage to his jaw."

The group of unknown men is described as containing two Asian men and two black men. It is believed they left the scene in a car .
