Callers into Shrewsbury's Guildhall were unable to get through to the borough council for five minutes once every hour yesterday afternoon after every phoneline in the building went down.

Bosses noticed a problem at Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council's offices at about 12.45pm when people were unable to phone in for five minutes.

The problem happened again a further three times during the afternoon with the system going down for five minutes at a time. SABC spokesman Jon King said: "At 12.45pm the phones went down for five minutes and they then went off for five minutes on the hour every hour."

The phone line system was rebooted and investigations were under way today to determine what had caused the problem.
