Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik is taking legal advice after revelations about his private life appeared in a national newspaper.

It follows the publication of a serialisation of a book by his former fiancée, weather forecaster Sian Lloyd, A Funny Kind of Love, yesterday.

Sian, 49, made a number of allegations over the couple's relationship in the newspaper article.

Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats vice-chairman Pete Jones said: "In reference to Ms Lloyd's latest comments about Mr Opik in the newspapers, he is not at this stage willing to make any specific comment about it until he has taken legal advice over the matter.

"However, it should be noted it is more than one year since Ms Lloyd decided to end her relationship with Mr Opik.

"Ms Lloyd has also married the millionaire Mr Jonathan Ashman in that time.

"It is therefore difficult to understand Ms Lloyd's motives for pursuing Mr Opik in this way.

"Clearly, Mr Opik has not responded in like kind and this is very much to Lembit's credit.

"One would hope the public will take a similar and sympathetic view given the extent and intensity of Ms Lloyd's continuing interest in Mr Opik."

Yesterday Mr Opik said he could not talk about the article "because we are taking legal advice about that at the moment, I'm afraid".

Asked if he was considering suing, Mr Opik said: "I can't say more about that at the moment, but there are some things that may be illegal about that article."

Mr Opik, 43, and Ms Lloyd announced their engagement in 2002 but their relationship ended in October 2006.

The couple even appeared on the TV gameshow Who Wants to be a Millionaire? together, winning a total of £64,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and NCH Action for Children.

Mr Opik, who has been MP for Montgomeryshire since 1997, is now dating Gabriela Irimia, 25, one half of Romanian pop duo, The Cheeky Girls.

Ms Lloyd married the millionaire motor racing entrepreneur, Jonathan Ashman, at the North Wales Italianate village Portmeirion at New Year.
