A 25-year-old Telford man suffered serious head injuries after being attacked by a gang of men today. The victim underwent emergency surgery.
He was attacked outside his home at Briarwood in Brookside shortly after midnight.
Detectives said they were linking it to a burglary at the man's home yesterday when thieves took a haul of PlayStation games.
Two 16-year-old boys have been arrested in connection with the attack.
Detective Sergeant Mark Bellamy, of Telford CID, today said: "We were called to Briarwood in Brookside shortly after midnight. The man was assaulted in the communal area outside his flat.
"The area was cordoned off pending forensic examinations of the scene. At this stage it appears to be an unprovoked attack.
"We believe he was assaulted by a group of males. Two youths remain in custody on suspicion of assaulting a 25-year-old local man causing him serious head injuries."
Mr Bellamy added: "We are also considering a potential link to a burglary at the victim's address at 3pm yesterday. Anybody who may have seen three white men running away carrying a black bin bag is urged to contact police."
The unconscious man was found by a friend who called the emergency services.
He was taken to Telford's Princess Royal Hospital before being transferred to North Staffordshire Hospital where he underwent an operation. His condition is described as very poorly.
Shropshire Ambulance Service spokesman Murray Macgregor said: "We were called at 12.12am today to a report of a 25-year-old man who had been assaulted."
