A swan underwent emergency surgery after it was shot by yobs at a Telford recreational area, RSPCA inspectors revealed today.
The female swan had to be rescued from Leegomery Pool with an injury caused by an air gun.
RSPCA inspectors have appealed for witnesses to come forward in the hunt for the culprits behind the "vicious attack" on Tuesday.
The swan is recovering in a wildlife centre after RSPCA inspectors launched a boat rescue to save the bird. They said the swan was unable to stand or walk and was bleeding from the side when three officers took to the water to rescue it.
Following X-rays, vets operated and removed a pellet from above the bird's knee.
RSPCA inspector Dave McCartney, who is investigating the incident, said the swan now faced a long period of recuperation at the wildlife centre to see if she would fully recover from the attack.
A ring on the swan's leg showed she is five years old.
Mr McCartney said: "I am horrified by this unnecessary attack on this stunning swan.
"Locals believe they may have heard shooting noises in the area and I would urge anyone who sees or hears anyone attacking birds and wildlife to contact the police or the RSPCA. This type of mindless cruelty to wild animals has to stop."
The attack comes after a two-week- old cygnet was killed in Willenhall.
