Nearly 90 phone boxes across Shropshire are facing the axe due to the popularity of mobile phones.

BT bosses are currently consulting on the future of 89 kiosks around the county, including 16 each in Shrewsbury and Telford.

A 90-day consultation period will end in Shrewsbury and Atcham on September 7, and in Telford & Wrekin on September 24.

BT says it remains committed to providing a public payphone service but points out that nearly 60 per cent of its payphones are unprofitable and more than 50 per cent are used less than once a week.
