One of Shrewsbury's historic alleyways could be closed to the public because of its filthy and unpleasant condition.

Police, supported by town centre partners, are calling on Shropshire County Council for a closure order on the Seventy Steps, which for centuries has provided a walkway between Pride Hill and the old livestock market area, now Riverside shops.

David Walton, town centre police officer, claims it has become a haven for drug users and drinkers, who use it as a makeshift toilet.

Mr Walton said: "It can be a very upsetting experience for visitors and locals who use the steps and come across the filthy residue that people leave behind."

Writing in a newsletter, Rosemary Thornes, chairman of Shrewsbury Town Residents' Association, said: "The lower section continues to be misused by a few, which makes it unpleasant for the majority."

The county council will be consulting with other stakeholders with a view to progress a gating order to prevent anti-social behaviour.
