A 28-year-old man has been arrested after he attempted to break into a jewellery store in Shrewsbury town centre.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested after he attempted to break into a jewellery store in Shrewsbury town centre.

One eyewitness said she saw a man being wrestled to the ground and believed she saw a knife during the incident in Pride Hill yesterday.

Police said they were called to the scene at 4.40pm and arrested a man in connection with an incident at TH Baker Jewellers.

David Evans, manager of the jewellers, said: "Someone tried to break in. They didn't manage to steal anything. They tried to smash the glass as they had window cutters but they didn't. We then called the police."

Taya Dovaston, an eyewitness, said: "A bloke pushed a man to the ground and a knife came out.

"Someone shouted stop him when he was running down Pride Hill."

A police spokesman said: "A man has been arrested following an incident at a jewellers. A 28-year-old man was arrested at Pride Hill.

"He was detained by ShopWatch members who had been alerted by the ShopWatch system. He was held briefly before being arrested by police on suspicion of attempted burglary and other offences."

Inspector John O'Leary said: "This in another example of the effectiveness of the ShopWatch scheme in Shrewsbury."

He added the man was helping with police inquiries and urged anyone with any information about the incident to contact Shrewsbury police on 0300 333 3000.
