Woman fighting for life

A woman was fighting for her life in hospital today after a car left a Shrewsbury road and collided with a number of trees.

The woman, who is in her 20s, suffered serious head injuries and lacerations to her face in the crash in Hubert Way in the early hours of today.

Police said the woman was being treated at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and her injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The incident happened at about 3am when a grey MG ZR left the road before striking trees and then coming to rest.

A man in his 20s was also understood to have been in the vehicle at the time and he was also treated in hospital for a facial injury, although it is not believed to be serious.

The car suffered extensive damage in the incident, which is not believed to have involved any other vehicles.

A police investigation has been launched.

Constable Lewis Carpenter, from Shrewsbury Police and the officer investigating the circumstance surrounding the crash, issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

He said: "I would ask anybody with information which might help our investigation to contact police as a matter of urgency on 0300 333 3000."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was not called to the scene of the collision.
