playground1Plans for a £4.5 million school in Powys will go on display next week. Work on the 270-place school and children's centre at Trefonnen, Llandrindod Wells, could start in May.

It will be the first of its kind in Powys and will provide a range of services for children and families.

If approved by planners, work is expected to start in May and be completed by September 2010.

Powys County Council wants to fund the scheme as part of its capital programme over the next three years.

People are being urged to have their say on plans which will go on display at the school on Monday.

Emma Savage, council spokesman, said: "As part of it's school modernisation programme, Powys County Council has developed plans for a modern, community focussed school to replace the existing facility.

"Previous consultation has taken place with parents, pupils and the local community with comments taken on board as part of the development."

She said the latest plans would be on display in the school hall on Monday between 3.30pm and 7.30pm.

David Underhill, Trefonnen Primary School headteacher, said he was looking forward to having a new school built.

He said:"We are over the moon a new school is going to be built.

"It will certainly help raise the profile of the school and be a great benefit to children and families in the area."

He said the school would be built on the same site and pupils will remain in their present building until it is complete.
