Councillors in Welshpool have called for a crackdown on boy racers in the town, amid fears someone could be killed.

Welshpool Town Council has vowed to take action after problems on the town's Maesydre car park.

At a council meeting yesterday Councillor Tony Squibb said young motorists had been meeting in the car park to race. He said: "I attended a meeting in the grounds of Maesydre on Tuesday night along with fellow councillors and found that the car park was being used as a racing track.

"There was about five or six cars being driven in a very dangerous manner and I was very concerned. Myself and other councillors went up to speak to those involved but they drove off and shouted abuse.

"Something needs to be done to address the problem before someone is killed."

He said councillors would meet to discuss the matter in more detail at the next recreation committee meeting on May 6.

Councillor John Corfield said: "I was there too and what they were doing was very dangerous."

Council clerk Robert Robinson said the registration numbers from two of the cars involved have been passed on to the police.
