Shropshire's Ironbridge Gorge is in the running to be named the UK's top picnic spot after scooping the title for the Midlands.

The World Heritage Site beat other locations in the region, such as last year's winner The Upper Derwent Valley in Derbyshire, in a public vote.

The site will now battle it out against other regional winners for the title of Warburtons Best Picnic Spot 2009. As a regional winner, Ironbridge Gorge will receive £500 from the baker.

The money is to be given to the organisers of the World Heritage Festival to be held this year.

Steve Miller, The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust chief executive, said: "We are delighted to have been picked by voters as the best picnic venue in the Midlands."

The UK winner will be announced the week commencing June 15.
