Letter: Give MPs less pay to reflect cut in duties
In these hard times the Government should be looking for ways of eliminating unnecessary expenditure and reducing waste.
I am absolutely certain that there is one area of waste that has not been considered.
I propose that instead of considering giving our MPs an attendance allowance the Government should cut their pay and allowances by 80 per cent to reflect the changes in the MPs' responsibility and workload.
This is due to the fact that 80 per cent of our laws are now made by a largely foreign regime in Brussels which the British public cannot vote out of office if they are unhappy about what is being done to their way of life. Small wonder people cannot be bothered to vote.
How has this happened? At no stage did the British public give our MPs permission to hand over power to the European Commission. In fact the handover was illegal according to our "Bill of Rights".
Successive Conservative and Labour governments have given away that which was not theirs to give away - the sovereignty over the British people.
The result is we have no say in the making of 80 per cent of the laws and our MPs therefore have only 20 per cent of the responsibility and workload that they had in the 1960s.
Judging by recent events, our MPs now fill in their time being "inventive" with their expenses and going on freebie junkets.
It is only logical and just therefore that they should award themselves an 80 per cent cut in wages when they return from their extended summer holidays (which this year are a quarter of a year long).
