Air Cadets in Oldbury are embracing the digital revolution and turning to social networking sites to attract new members.
Cadets of 888 (Oldbury) Squadron are using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to promote their activities. Based in Vicarage Lane, Langley, the group has set up a "creative media" section which has begun creating monthly podcasts instead of the conventional newsletter. Leaders hope these will provide a more realistic and interactive news source.
As well as being available on the squadron's new website, www.888squadron.org.uk, the podcasts are also available on iTunes, where users can subscribe and have the podcasts automatically downloaded to their MP3 players.
Cadets have also began creating short videos on the squadron's various activities, such as fundraising, which are uploaded to the squadron website and YouTube. These videos include interviews with staff and cadets of 888, as well as clips of cadets out and about on activities.
Flight Sergeant Jarrod Williams, said: "Through these sites, the squadron can update cadets on new events and activities available to them, post pictures and videos of the squadron flying, gliding and camping, and also give forum for the cadets to discuss the squadron, all moderated by squadron staff.
"These sites also mean that current cadets can show friends who may be interested in joining the squadron, what they do every Tuesday, Thursday and weekends, without having to bring them to the squadron Headquarters.
"Potential recruits can also ask questions about what the squadron does and how they can get involved."
The Air Training Corps is a voluntary youth organisation for 13 to18-year-olds providing young people with opportunities to learn how to fly in a plane solo, go shooting and take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award,
As well as weekend activities, Oldbury Air Cadets meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6.45 till 9.30pm.
