Alternative parking spaces are being sought in Willenhall following the announcement that a popular town centre car park will close while a new Morrisons superstore is built.
Traders and shoppers said they feared for the future.
Signs informing the public that the Clemson Street car park will close shortly have now gone up.
Businesses complained no information had been given about other places to park, prompting fears shoppers will desert the town.
But Willenhall south representative Carl Creaney added that council officers are now looking at alternative parking sites in the town centre, in a bid to allay traders' fears.
He revealed one under consideration is the former Little London Primary School in Stafford Street.
He said: "It's being looked into with people trying to find out if there are any health and safety implications of using the site.
"We've got to work to safeguard the businesses in the town and make sure people keep coming into Willenhall.
"I've had lots of traders and business people who are concerned about this and general parking issues."
Walsall Council traffic management group leader, Paul Leighton, said: "We are not anticipating problems during the Morrisons redevelopment work but appreciate local concerns on this issue and are looking at possible temporary provision."
