Robert Robinson, Welshpool Town Council clerk, said work on the supermarket would begin, once the new livestock market at Buttingon Cross was complete and subject to full planning permission being granted.

The supermarket firm today said the November start date was a possibility and hoped work could begin as soon as possible.

Mr Robinson said: "Work on the new livestock market should be completed in October which will allow work to start on the new Tesco store in November.

"The town council is looking forward to seeing the end result of this project and I've been told that the supermarket could be up and running by Easter next year."

He said the Tesco store would form part of a major retail scheme which would also include almost 4,000 sq ft of non-food stores.

Also included are a petrol filling station and a canalside cafe/restaurant. Mr Robinson said up to 400 jobs could be created.

He said: "This project also includes a new one-way traffic system in Welshpool which is expected to start in September.

"Work on this should be completed within about seven weeks of the start date and will mean major changes to Broad Street and Brook Street."

Felix Gummer, Tesco spokesman, confirmed the Welshpool store would create more than 150 new jobs.

He added: "The November start date could be achieved but it's too early to confirm at the moment."
