Councillors in a north Shropshire town are calling on rail bosses to meet them over "dangerous" plans to make changes to the town's level crossing.

Network Rail is looking at operating the level crossing in Wem by CCTV and controlling it from Cardiff.

But Wem Town Council is unhappy at the move. At a meeting last night members voted unanimously to invite the company to a public meeting to discuss the "very short-sighted" proposals.

Councillor Mandy Meakin, deputy mayor, said: "In view of what happened in America this week at a main controlled crossing that was operated by CCTV in an area control I think it's very, very unwise of them."
