Police in north Shropshire are set to put the brakes on speeding motorists through a series of community initiatives.

At a meeting of the Ellesmere Area Local Joint Committee last night, Sergeant Julian Hinds said he wanted to revive a community speed watch scheme in Wem and Ellesmere.

The scheme involves community volunteers targeting speeding hotspots with speed guns and then feeding information back to the police, so the worst offenders can be monitored and warned about the dangers of speeding.

Sergeant Hinds said he hoped active schemes could be set up in areas like Welshampton and Cockshutt.

He added the scheme was a way in which the police and community could work together to solve a troublesome problem.
