battlefield-topShrewsbury's MP is to call for controversial £60 million plans for an incinerator in the town to be scrapped during high level talks with waste bosses later this month.

Daniel Kawczynski said he would be meeting with regional directors for Veolia, the firm behind the proposals for the incinerator at Battlefield, which has provoked huge public opposition.

The Tory MP said he had also asked Councillor Keith Barrow, leader of Shropshire Council, to attend the gathering as he too admits the matter needs to be reviewed in the wake of 600 letters of objection and comments received by residents.

Mr Kawczynski said: "I have got a meeting coming up with Veolia later this month and I have invited Keith Barrow to attend. I am going to be formally requesting that the incinerator plans are dropped."

Donald Macphail, of Veolia, said he would be explaining to Mr Kawczynski that an energy from waste facility was just one part of the waste strategy which also includes collection, recycling and waste minimisation.
