Children to learn 'respect'

Children in Wem are being taught to respect others and become good citizens, thanks to a new police initiative.

A series of events and talks have been organised to take place next week as part of Respect Week.

The event is aimed at raising awareness of the impact anti-social behaviour can have on others and to encourage respect and tolerance.

Constable Dave Carpenter and Community Support Officer Pete Elson, from Wem, who spearheaded the scheme, say activities are part of West Mercia's youth inclusion programme.

They have been designed to provide positive and enjoyable pursuits for youngsters and to demonstrate how respect and tolerance for others can benefit the whole community.

Activities arranged for the week include an activity day for 12 Wem youngsters, where they will go to Llangollen with police officers to try their hand at white water rafting and archery, with a similar event taking place in September, as well as talks and school visits.

Constable Carpenter said making links with young people was proven to reduce anti-social behaviour.

"It's a win-win situation for all involved," he said.

"It is good for the police to build bridges with young people, youngsters become involved in enjoyable pursuits we are able to arrange with help from partner agencies, and in return they help out on various projects within the local community."
