Sheep to take part in wind protest

Six sheep are to be walked across London Bridge as part of a protest by a Mid Wales council.

It is just one in a line of demonstrations planned by Welshpool Town Council in its fight to prevent thousands of wind turbine lorries travelling through the town.

At a meeting of Welshpool Town Council last night, councillors backed proposals for several demonstrations to take place sometime over the next few months.

Robert Robinson, council clerk, said: "They did last night approve various demonstrations including taking six sheep with little collars on with little turbines over London Bridge.

"It will be a short walk for the sheep and they will be coming from London not Wales.

"We will also be writing to every county councillor in Powys seeking support for a public inquiry."

Other demonstrations to be held include a "mass march" with members of the community councils.

"It's not just us affected, it's other people around us," said Mr Robinson.

In addition, they are looking to invite as many motorists as possible to take part in a slow drive in a circle around the town for one hour at 5mph to show people the effect the lorries would have on the town.

Mr Robinson said the protests were being arranged as councillors feared any transport of windfarm equipment going through the town was unacceptable as it could damage the fabric of the town centre.
