An extra £100,000 could be spent on a major project to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Shrewsbury's most famous son Charles Darwin, it emerged today.

Councillors are being asked to approve the increase to the budget for the Quantum Leap sculpture project.

Work to correct the 12-metre high £350,000 Quantum Leap in Mardol Quay Gardens, which has been beset by technical problems, started last month as it was reportedly as much as 18 inches out of alignment at the top of the structure.

It is due to be officially opened next month.

A report to the council's cabinet, which is due to meet next Wednesday, requests that councillors approve an increase in the budget. It says: "Approval is requested as part of this report for an additional £100,000 to be allocated to this project to meet the additional costs incurred in delivering this project.

"This will be financed from reserve balances inherited from Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council."

George Candler, assistant director for culture and leisure services at Shropshire Council, today said: "Discussions on the project costs are still ongoing."
