Two intrepid county motorists are gearing up to drive a banger across Europe in the Screwball Rally as part of the Hope House/Shropshire Star Corporate Challenge.

Stuart Rogers and Paul Evans of Oswestry-based P&S Electrical Contractors have joined scores of county firms who have each been given £50 by the Shropshire Star to stage events and generate cash for Hope House. The pair have put their £50 towards buying an old BMW car which they will drive in the rally from October 5.

They raised the rest of the £400 to buy the banger themselves, and once they have completed the rally will be donating the vehicle, which is roadworthy, for auction at a ball for Hope House in Oswestry on October 10.

Ahead of the four-day drive across countries including Germany, Poland, France and the Czech Republic, Stuart and Paul were busy raising cash for the cause with donations from shoppers outside Stans Supermarket in St Martins.

Meanwhile, Telford company SmartWater Technology staged an awards night raising a staggering £1,326 for the challenge - £1,290 of it from a raffle alone.

The event was held at Telford Hotel Golf and Spa Resort which supported the cause and donated the first prize of an overnight stay for two in their hotel.
