Hundreds of pounds could be spent providing more litter bins in Welshpool in a bid to protect residents from being injured.

Town councillors claim vandals are continually smashing glass bottles and leaving them on the Maesydre recreation grounds, which accommodates the town's rugby and football pitches, as well as a children's play area. They fear someone could be seriously injured.

Dyfed-Powys Police say they have now stepped up patrols in the area.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said councillors were now considering spending money on extra litter bins in the area.

He said: "This has been a problem for a while now and we are very keen to highlight it before someone is seriously injured.

"We've met with the police this week and even though they are doing all they can to prevent this from happening, we need to be doing all we can and taking action too.

"The recreation committee is now looking into installing extra bins on the site in the hope that people may start using them."

He urged anyone experiencing problems in the area to get in touch with the police.

"Anyone who sees bottles being smashed by people on the grounds should contact the police immediately."
