Council eyeing sale of bus site

A £5 million plot of land in Shrewsbury earmarked for a new bus depot could be sold, with talks believed to be under way with an unnamed retail chain.

Shropshire Council inherited the land, next to the Tesco Extra in Harlescott, from the former borough council. Part of it has planning permission for a bus depot for Arriva but it was also revealed today the authority is considering selling the site, with negotiations believed to be under way with the retailer.

Council cabinet member for assets Peter Nutting said he could not disclose whom it was talking to.

But he confirmed the council was possibly looking to offload the site.

He said: "We're looking at the future of the land by Tesco at the moment. Hopefully in the next few weeks we will be able to clarify what is available."

He added: "We have got to look at the whole site and see whether land is needed for a bus depot and what land may be needed for other uses."
