The man, who asked not to be named, today said the burglar squeezed through a small bathroom window. He said he was very annoyed.

"I grabbed my walking stick which has got a good point on it for jabbing and I gingerly checked all of the rooms but he was gone," he said.

About £70 in cash was stolen and police in Whitchurch are appealing for information.

Police said forensic officers attended the scene and a search was carried out but the youth was not found.

The burglary happened between 5.30am and 6am on Saturday in Shrewsbury Street.

Police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk said: "The victim was woken when a youth, believed to be in his late teens, entered his bedroom and he immediately contacted police."

Officers are investigating whether the incident is linked to an earlier report just after 5am of a young man seen running up a driveway in Mill Street.

The burglar is white, about 5ft 4in tall and of average build.

He had short hair and was wearing a dark, possibly grey jumper.

Anybody who might have seen or heard any suspicious activity in the area which might be connected asked to contact police on 0300 333 3000. Alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
