Well, this is already done by a volunteer group and anyway, even if people do rally round, there will be yet another vile mess everywhere in a short time.

However, why not enlist the help of the groups of people who actually cause the litter? There are several sites in town, including the railway station platform, around the lovely new toilet block, Corvedale Road by Spar, where there is constantly a mountain of cans, bottles, chip papers, etc.

Those responsible are mostly young people who can easily be found and approached. Could these youths be reminded that to drop litter is an offence and they could be fined? Also, schools and clubs could be targeted, as well as places where adults meet for some are by no means innocent.

I rang the number for the Environmental Maintenance Team in your paper and had great difficulty in getting to speak to anyone in authority!
