Traces of illegal drugs were found on 19 revellers at a nightclub during a crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour in Oakengates, police revealed today.

Officers found the traces after testing 221 clubbers on their way into The Office in Oakengates but they stressed none of the revellers was actually found in possession of any drugs.

Acting Insp Becky Harper, who organised the operation on November 28, said: "We have a good working relationship with the staff at The Office and we worked with them to provide a high level of security for those attending the club.

"As a condition of entry, this included asking clubbers to undertake a hand swab which was checked through an Ion Track drug testing device.

"On the night, a total of 221 tests were carried out with 19 individuals testing positive for contact, at very minor levels, with the main varieties of controlled drugs.

"All those who tested positive were debriefed by officers in private and I can confirm that no-one spoken to as part of this test process was found to be in possession of drugs of any sort."

"It's pleasing to report that the evening passed off trouble free and that only one arrest was necessary on the night.

"This 19-year-old man, who was not actually in the club itself, was arrested and later cautioned for being drunk and disorderly."
