Health chiefs in north Shropshire fear many parents are ignoring advice to get their children immunised from swine flu.

Staff at Ellesmere Medical Practice say the vaccination programme for the "high risk" group could potentially save lives.

They are concerned that parents could put their children at risk if they fail to take up the jab and are now offering exclusive appointments every Thursday morning for children in Ellesmere.

A spokesman said: "Swine flu can kill and children are a 'high risk' group. Yet, why is it that many parents would rather take the risk than protect their vulnerable children? This is the question that is baffling the staff of Ellesmere Medical Practice.

"Personal invitations to the parents of eligible youngsters are shortly to be sent out, but early signs suggest that they are going to be ignored. This is worrying the practice.

"The practice is taking the situation so seriously that it is offering vaccination appointments exclusively for children between the ages of six months and four years 11 months.

"These sessions will be on Thursday mornings and parents are urged to make an appointment as soon as their invitation arrives."
