A motorist was forced off a Shropshire road in a terrifying incident in which another driver repeatedly rammed the back of his car.

Grant Savin, of Minsterley, near Shrewsbury, was driving home with his girlfriend when his Citroen Saxo was rammed several times from the back by the driver a four-wheel drive vehicle, before then being pushed completely off the road.

Mr Savin, 21, said the incident, which happened on the A488 at Pontesbury on Saturday, left him and his girlfriend Tanya Clinton "terrified".

He said: "We had been visiting friends and were driving home to Minsterley at about 3.30am when we got to the one-way system at Pontesbury.

"All of a sudden this big 4x4 vehicle came up behind us from nowhere with its lights on full beam, which dazzled me.

"We wondered what they were playing at and it then began shunting into the back of my car and we just looked at each other and wondered what on earth could be happening.

"It then hit us really hard and we were sent off the road into the side and we were left shaking.

"As it was in the early hours of the morning we really did not know what to do so just got ourselves back home and called the police."

Mr Savin said in daylight he discovered his car had been badly damaged and would need new back lights and the boot repaired.

"I don't know why they did it, we hadn't done anything to anger them and they left us terrified," he said.

"We couldn't even get their registration plate or anything as it happened so quickly and was so dark. Thankfully neither of us was injured."

Investigating officer Constable Ben Monk said the 4x4 was possibly a Mitsubishi, possibly green and might have had bull bars on the front.

A police investigation has been launched and officers are keen to hear from anyone who might know anything about the incident which could help with inquiries.

"I would ask for any information about the incident either from witnesses or from anyone who might be able to identify the driver of the 4x4, to contact me at Shrewsbury police station on 0300 333 3000," he said.
