Motorists faced delays when a car was severely damaged by fire on a main road into Shrewsbury.

The incident happened on the A5 Churncote island at the Welshpool junction at about 7.40pm yesterday.

The occupants of the car were unharmed and out of the vehicle when emergency services arrived.

Fire crews sent one appliance from Shrewsbury to the scene.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "One saloon vehicle was severely damaged by fire.

"Crews used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet to put out the fire."

He added that the crew stood down at about 8pm.

One witness, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was coming back from Oswestry when I saw a car with what looked like an engine fire in the lay-by. Fire crews were there damping down and they had put out blue lights and cones to narrow the lane.

"The occupants were out of the car and there was no ambulance at the scene."

A spokeswoman from West Mercia Police said officers helped manage traffic past the scene but the road did not need to be closed.

She added that motorists faced short tailbacks for a brief time past the scene.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they did not attend.
