Aldi has previously been granted permission to build a supermarket in Whitchurch following an appeal, but fresh plans were submitted with modifications.

Planning chiefs have now confirmed the final plans were given the go-ahead under delegated powers, subject to a range of conditions.

The application was for one supermarket and two non-food retail units, highway improvements, service arrangements, public transport improvements and a landscaping scheme, which was previously approved, to allow for a change in position of the supermarket and the reduction in unit size and car parking spaces.

A report by Shropshire Council planners said: "The principle of food and non-food retail on this site has been accepted by the previous consents granted by the authority and the planning inspector. It is considered that the layout, size and design of the proposed units is acceptable and will not result in detrimental harm to the character of the area or the amenities of the neighbouring land users."

Aldi had agreed to extend a bus route in the town as part of a planning agreement, amid fears the shop would impact on town centre traders.

It is understood the new store will create dozens of full and part-time jobs.

No start date for the work has been confirmed yet.
