Call for Benbow exhibition

A call has gone out for one of Shrewsbury's most famous sons to be honoured in the town.

Barbara Drage, from Radbrook, Shrewsbury, said she would like to see an exhibition to Admiral John Benbow.

Earlier this month the mystery of the whereabouts of a memorial to Benbow was solved - thanks to the Shropshire Star.

An appeal was launched to trace the display case containing items linked to Admiral Benbow, by Andrew Finch, from Wattlesborough, near Shrewsbury.

He also issued an appeal for the town to celebrate Admiral Benbow.

Jade Lynch, of Benbow Quay, off Coton Hill, solved the mystery of the memorial which is a glass case containing a section of a tree with a key hanging from a rusty nail.

In a post on the Star's website, she said: "I live at Benbow Quay and, yes, the tree with the key hanging on it is displayed behind the fountains in between the wishbone staircase."

Mrs Drage said she had known about Benbow since her school days in Bolton. She said: "There was a song in one of my school books which I bought 70 years ago. I wondered if anybody would be interested in singing about his exploits."
