Civic leaders have criticised Shirehall bosses after it was confirmed a community skip scheme in north and south Shropshire is to be scrapped.
Civic leaders have criticised Shirehall bosses after it was confirmed a community skip scheme in north and south Shropshire is to be scrapped.
The move will see an end to provision of skips in the former district council areas.
Now many people are facing longer journeys to their nearest household recycling centres.
Market Drayton Mayor Roy Aldcroft said today: "It's a disappointing decision as nothing has been put in place to encourage recycling locally.
"It means people in the town now have a 26 mile round trip to Whitchurch recycling centre.
"The beauty of the skips was that people without their own transport could get rid of large items of rubbish safely without resorting to dumping things ."
The move is also set to affect residents in south Shropshire, many of whom will have to travel to Craven Arms to dispose of bigger items of waste.
Councillor Keith Pinches, Mayor of Bishop's Castle, said: "It's going to encourage fly-tipping definitely. They make out they're going to save money, it's going to cost a far sight more to collect up the rubbish."
