Cyclist badly injured after car collision

A cyclist was taken to hospital suffering from serious head injuries and a suspected broken leg today after he was in collision with a car while riding at a roundabout in Telford.

The man, who has not been named but was aged in his mid-20s, was injured at the roundabout in Oakengates.

The incident happened at the junction of New Street and Lion Street at about 7.20am. Police sealed off both roads for about two hours while officers dealt with the incident and cleared the scene.

Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds said today the collision happened near to the railway in Oakengates and ambulance personnel were called to the location.

He added: "The cyclist was sedated and taken to hospital because there were concerns about the head injury he suffered.

"The car driver was not physically injured.

"The road was sealed off at the bottom of Lion Street and New Street for about a couple of hours at least."

Chris Kowalik, spokesman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "We sent an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

"The cyclist was a man who had head injuries, a knee injury and a suspected broken leg.

"He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital for treatment while the car driver was treated for shock on the scene by the fast response vehicle driver."

Mr Kowalik said: "It was a serious head injury. He was unconscious throughout. He was sedated and was still unconscious when we handed him over at the Princess Royal Hospital."
