Motorists faced delays today when a major road through Mid Wales was shut after a lorry shed its load of timber.

A stretch of the A483 road between Newtown and Llandrindod Wells was closed when the incident happened on the Dolfor side of Llanbadarn Fynydd at about 6.20am.

It is thought the vehicle had jack-knifed just north of the village near a bend and came to rest on its side, totally blocking both carriageways.

The driver escaped uninjured and no other vehicle is believed to have been involved.

Dyfed-Powys Police said that nobody was hurt but the road was likely to be closed for several hours and diversions had been set up.

Traffic was being rerouted from Llanbadarn "over the top" via minor roads, a Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said.

Lee Evans, a spokesman for Powys County Council, said the road had been closed at just after 6.20am when a timber lorry shed its load.

It was not known what time the road would be reopened but diversions had been set up from Llanbadarn, he said.

Traffic travelling south from Newtown could take the alternative route via the A489 and A470 via Rhayader.
