Hundreds of people have turned to social networking site Facebook as part of a campaign to get 24-hour medical cover in Newtown.

The group has been set up because many residents are fed up with having to travel 16 miles to Welshpool to see a doctor out of hours.

Mayor of Newtown Councillor Joy Jones, the group's founder, said the site was calling for the out-of-hours service Shropdoc to be permanently based in Newtown.

As of today, the group had more than 300 members.

Councillor Jones said: "It is not right that the people of Newtown have only limited cover from the out-of-hours service. We have to travel to Welshpool to see the doctor in the evenings, weekends or bank holidays."

She urged people to sign a petition, calling for Shropdoc to be permanently based in Newtown. Anyone wanting to sign the online petition should visit www.ipetitions.com/petition/newtown/
