A major public consultation gets under way today on plans to revitalise Wem.

The proposals for a new town square and community area are now on show at various venues around the town.

The proposals have been put forward to help breathe new life into the town centre after concerns were raised about the number of empty premises in the High Street.

The consultation is being carried out by Shropshire Council.

Copies of the drawings will be on display until May 17 at the library, town hall, Edinburgh House and the town council offices.

A public exhibition will then be held in the Co-op store, which will include drawings and further details about the scheme.

Keith Jones, Shropshire Council's senior highways engineer, said the proposals, if supported, could "enhance the area and contribute to making the town a more attractive place to live, work and visit".

Other proposals put forward by the reformed Wem Economic Forum include cash incentives for new shops opening in the town and possible improvements to the market.
