Veteran comedian Ken Dodd is expected to have people laughing in the aisles tonight when he brings his own brand of humour to Shropshire to help raise vital cash for charity.

Armed with his trusty tickling stick and frizzy hair, the 82-year-old star shows no sign of letting up and is to perform at Whitchurch Civic Centre at 7.30pm.

Famed for his mirth marathon performances, sometimes running into the early hours, Ken is no stranger to Shropshire.

He visited last year and gave two "Herculean" sold out performances of his Happiness show at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn.

The second night was added due to popular demand and Ken even shared few thoughts about Wem in north Shropshire.

Tonight fans can expect more of Ken's brand of one-liners and the songs his fans know and love such as Tears and Happiness.

The showbiz star was invited to perform in Whitchurch by the town's mayor Councillor Alan Chesters.

He organised the event to mark the end of his year in office with "a bang".

Councillor Chesters today said he was delighted Ken had agreed to perform.

Profits on the night will go to his mayoral charity fund, which supports Headway in Shrewsbury, the Midlands Air Ambulance and the Stroke Association.

He said: "I believe Ken still has a house in Whitchurch so it's a homecoming of sorts."

A few tickets, priced £15, are still available and can be purchased on the door.
