Two motorists had to be cut free from the wreckage of their vehicles following a collision on a main road in north Shropshire.

Motorists faced delays for about four hours following the collision between a transit van and a pick-up truck along the A528 between Burlton and Cockshutt, near Ellesmere, at about 1pm yesterday.

The incident left the road blocked both ways. It was reopened by about 5pm.

One of the drivers, a man in his 30s, was left with neck and back pain and was airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The other driver had chest and hand injuries and was taken to the RSH by land ambulance.

Firefighters from Wem, Ellesmere, Baschurch, Shrewsbury and Wellington used special cutting equipment to free both drivers.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the collision to call with information on 03003 333000.

Elsewhere, a woman required treatment from paramedics after a two-vehicle collision at Much Wenlock.

Police officers and an ambulance crew attended the scene of the incident on the A458 between a car and a lorry yesterday afternoon.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Claire Thomas said the crew attended the scene at 4.30pm and treated a woman in her 60s who was complaining of minor neck and chest injuries.

The patient was assessed at the scene and said she did not want to go to hospital.

Police said officers were called at 4.20pm.

The road was closed for a short time.
