Tesco today unveiled an artist's impression of its proposed store for Tenbury Wells, which would create up to 180 jobs. Plans for the 15,000 sq ft store were submitted to Malvern Hills District Council at the end of April.

The supermarket giant said the proposed new store would be environmentally-friendly, incorporating a sustainable timber frame and glass structure, providing a modern, contemporary feel.

The proposed site for the store is the town's former cattle market. The plans have already proved controversial, with some residents welcoming the move and others opposing it.

A Facebook group "Fight For Tesco in Tenbury Wells" has 285 members.

Supporters of the store have said the town needs a supermarket to bring it up to date and provide greater choice in the area.

But those opposed to the development fear it could have a negative impact on the town's small businesses.

The plans are on display in the Pump Rooms in Tenbury Wells today and tomorrow so residents can meet representatives from Tesco and ask questions.

Tony Fletcher, corporate affairs manager at Tesco, said: "This is an opportunity for members of the public, and the local community, to speak to members of our planning team and give their feedback. The comments we receive from local people at this exhibition will then be incorporated into the scheme where possible."

The plans include 94 car-parking spaces and a range of energy saving features.

The public exhibition is at the Pump Rooms until 6.30pm today and will be open from 9am to 4pm tomorrow.
