Stonemason Malcolm Sier is preparing for a big day today as a new remembrance memorial he created is due to be officially unveiled in Telford.

The memorial, on the edge of the Arena in Telford Town Park, commemorates all those from the borough affected by conflicts past and present.

Malcolm, whose workshop is in Jackfield, near Ironbridge, has designed the monument which incorporates a central ironwork poppy and engraved words within two pieces of Kilkenny stone.

It is due to be unveiled at a ceremony which is also due to see The Rifles honoured with the Freedom of the Borough.

The Ecumenical Dean of Telford, The Rev Andy Smith, will give a special dedication at 2.35pm to begin the ceremonies.

Telford & Wrekin Council Leader Councillor Andrew Eade and Councillors Stephen Bentley and Jacqui Seymour are all due to lay wreaths, along with the clerk of Hollinswood and Randlay Parish Council, Katrina Baker. A minute's silence is due to be held and the Last Post played by two buglers from E company.

The Freedom of Telford & Wrekin is then due to handed over to The Rifles.

Councillor Stephen Bentley said: "This memorial will add to the other memorials around the borough and provide a location for quiet reflection."
