Crowds took advantage of the sunshine and lined the streets to watch the Welshpool Carnival procession make its way through the Mid Wales town.

Organisers said today they were delighted with the success of this year's event.

The procession of floats was headed by this year's carnival queen, Sophie Astley, complete with attendants and page boys.

Yesterday's Monday Bank Holiday carnival topped off a whole weekend of community activities in Welshpool.

Carnival committee member Trish Hodges said the annual event had once again been a hit with the public.

She said: "I was amazed at the number of people who came down for it," adding: "We were lucky with the weather and it was a really nice atmosphere."

Carnival president and chairman Tegwyn Evans said this year's event was one of the best.

He said: "There was a tremendous amount of people there and I was really pleased with how it went. We don't know yet financially how things went but everyone seemed really happy and enjoyed the occasion.

Among the attractions on the Maesydre Recreation Grounds were marching bands, dancers and a charity dog show. There was also a funfair and circus performers entertained the crowds.
